Tyler Samaniego is settling in well with his new organization
When the Red Sox began reshaping their roster during the offseason, their first big move was acquiring Johan Oviedo from the Pittsburgh Pirates. While Oviedo was the headliner in the deal, he was not the only player to change uniforms. Prospect Tyler Samaniego also came to the Red Sox in the deal.
The Alabama native joined the Red Sox organization after an impressive season in the minors. While splitting time between four levels, the former 15th-round pick posted a 3.99 ERA and struck out 44 batters. He also added three saves to his resume while holding opponents to a .209 batting average.
Shortly after the 2025 campaign came to an end, he was added to the Pirates’ 40-man roster. While that has been followed by a lot of change, the 27-year-old is fitting in well with his new organization.
“ Everyone has been very welcoming,” Samaniego said at WooSox media day. “All the guys have treated me like family. It’s been awesome.”
In spring training, the talented lefty made the most of his opportunities while battling for a roster spot. In four games, Samaniego did not allow an earned run and struck out six batters. He was also able to lean on veterans Garrett Whitlock and Aroldis Chapman who also came to the Red Sox from different organizations.
“ They had similar situations coming up, so it was good to pick their brains in camp,” Samaniego said.
Since joining the Red Sox, Samaniego has not only been adjusting to a new organization but also adding to his pitch mix. One of the organization’s focuses has been giving him a deeper arsenal to get batters out.
“ We added a cutter,” Samaniego said. “ So that’s been a process and sharpening up the slider a little bit. Other than that, just trying to get better.
While Samaniego will start the season in Triple-A, he does not have a lot left to prove in the minors. If he builds on his success from last season, he could be in the majors sooner rather than later.
