Braves prospect Owen Carey has a bright future ahead after an impressive 2025 campaign
In the 15th round of the 2024 MLB Draft, the Atlanta Braves selected a talented outfielder from Manchester, New Hampshire, in Owen Carey. For the high schooler at the time, it was a dream come true with his dream of playing in the majors one step closer. It was also a moment Carey would never forget, as the way he found out from the Braves was unexpected.
“ It was sick, knowing it was coming,” said Carey. “ It was through my dad’s phone. I didn’t know if it didn’t answer mine, but he said this is for you. I thought it was going to be one of his buddies, but it was the scout. It was a relief, like this is really happening. It felt a little bit of everything.”
After months of anticipation, Carey made his pro debut last year and impressed in 117 games. In his first taste of minor league baseball, the Braves prospect posted a .258 batting average while driving in 63 runs. He also showed some power with 25 doubles, 4 home runs, and 2 triples. While Carey held his own, he did have to make adjustments along the way.
“ It was very different,” Carey said. “ You play 18 games in high school, so going from that to 140 takes a toll, but I have always loved playing every day, so it was a dream come true. It got hard in mid-June and July when it heated up, and I struggled a little then. It’s an adjustment I have made, but something you can never really prepare for.”
Due to his play, Carey is now ranked as the Braves’ No.30 prospect by MLB.Com. That is partly due to his unique combination of power and speed that should only improve as he gets older. While playing in Low-A last season, he stole six bases and was only caught once. His focus during 2026 will be to continue building on his success and working with the Braves to maximize his skills.
“ They have made me work on everything,” Carey said. “ I thought it would just be hitting but they really have you work on everything once you get down there. I never thought they would change how I throw. They took that from scratch and just worked on my throwing , speed, stealing, all the little things. They take pride in changing all the little things that you didn’t know needed to be changed.”
With one year of experience under his belt, Carey is poised to continue his rise through the Braves’ farm system during the 2026 campaign. For the 19 year-old, the goal is to hit for more power and continue improving his game.
“ This year, I definitely want to hit for more power,” Carey said. “ Get some of those doubles into homers. I also want to steal more bags and improve my ratio. With my mentality to shorten the struggle periods which will help improve my stats. Those are probably the three biggest things for me.”
